Telecoms services were not the only services that were required to be at the correct depth for the New Lynn Trench Rail Project to proceed. (See Horizontal Directional Drill required for Telecoms services case study for more details on this project)
Fletcher Construction Engineering performed some enabling works at the railway crossing in New Lynn and contracted PipeWorks to install an 180Ø Steel GAS MAIN pipe.
The 240m long, 18m deep pipeline was successfully installed by using PipeWorks Vermeer Navigator II, D100X120 Horizontal Drilling Rig, capable of a 45.3tonne push/pull and 16.3 kNm torque.
This gas main line needed to be installed on the opposite side of the same street as the Telecom Duct, requiring a much longer trench of 240m. The pilot hole had to be navigated within a distance of 1m from the "live" gas main as illustrated below.
Creating minimal disruption for the businesses and public in the area around the New Lynn Mall and to allow continuous vehicle access into the main car park at all times was a major challenge.
The drilling process required the addition of bentonite lubrication requiring a mini processing plant had to be erected and operated inside the confines of the site establishment.
